| Bio: | Hmmm. Ok. Well I'm a girl, in Maryland, in the United States. And my name is Sarah. :-D Nice to meet you! Since I've been writing a lot about my sickness lately, I feel I should say something about it. I have a disease called "Wegener's Granulomatosis." I was not born with it. Most doctors believe that there is both a genetic component and some sort of environmental trigger. WG is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the problems stem from my own immune system. Basically, my immune system is really strong and overactive, and somehow started identifying parts of my own body as invaders and proceded to attack them. My WG surfaced when I was 11 with recurrent ear infections, joint pain, sinus, and gum involvements. The WG quickly went into remission for four years with minimal medication. The WG began to flare again when I was 15 in 2004. This time it began in the ears and sinuses and quickly spread to the left lung. I have been very sick since the Summer of 2004. I've been to many different doctors and hospitals. My disease has been chronic, slow, and damaging. My left lung is irreversibly damaged. In late Spring 2006 I became extremely sick, and almost died. I was sedated in the ICU for months and so I don't remember a lot, but what I do remember is really frightening and still freaks me out. The treatment for WG is immunosuppression. Because of the damage the WG has caused in addition to my suppressed immune system, I get sick very often. Mostly I contract infections that a normal person would not get, because a normal person could fight it off. I also have to have an invasive bronchoscopy every couple weeks, where they put me to sleep, and the surgeon goes down into my bronchus with a scope and balloons and wires and tries to stretch out the tight and constricted bronchus. Sometimes he injects them with steroids, which helps. I also have two stents in my left bronchus. The WG has begun to affect the right lung a little, which is scary because it was always my good lung.
